IRS Jovem: Automatic Tax Filing Arrives This Week

Starting Wednesday, April 1st, young taxpayers will be able to benefit from automatic IRS filing - a convenience that until now was not available to those under the IRS Jovem (Young IRS) regime.
What changes and when
The measure was approved by the Council of Ministers and represents an important update to the universe of taxpayers covered by automatic filing. In practice, those benefiting from IRS Jovem now have access to the same convenience that already existed for other taxpayers: submitting the return with a single click, without the need to manually fill in the data.
The timeline is immediate. IRS filing starts precisely on April 1st, so young taxpayers will be able to debut this option right in this year's campaign.
It's worth noting that the option remains the taxpayer's choice. Just as with other cases covered by automatic IRS, it's the young people who decide whether or not to opt for this simplified form of filing.
Who is now covered
The Government also took the opportunity to broaden the scope of the IRS Jovem regime itself. The main changes are:
Extended age limit - The benefit now covers young people up to 35 years old, regardless of their level of completed education.
Doubled benefit duration - The maximum period of benefit rises from 5 to 10 years, giving more fiscal breathing room to those starting their professional lives.
The purpose behind the measure
The Government justifies the changes with the intention of reinforcing "the simplicity and efficiency of the filing process." By including IRS Jovem beneficiaries in automatic filing, a bureaucratic barrier is eliminated that forced this group into a more laborious process than necessary.
For young workers, the message is clear: if your data with the Tax Authority is up to date and you don't have more complex tax situations, this may be the fastest and most hassle-free way to fulfil your filing obligation - starting this week.
