Paying IRS in Installments: What You Need to Know

Received your tax assessment and have IRS to pay? Don't panic - it's possible to split the payment into monthly installments without major complications.
When is the payment deadline?
The standard IRS payment deadline is August 31st, after filing the return. If you can't pay in full, you can request an installment plan - but you must do it on time.
When can you request installments?
You have up to 15 days after the voluntary payment deadline to make the request, typically until September 15th.
Who can request without a guarantee?
For debts up to €5,000, you can pay in installments without providing any guarantee. For higher amounts, a guarantee such as a deposit or mortgage is required.
How many installments?
The maximum is 12 monthly installments, each with a minimum value of €102.
Are there interest charges?
Yes. Each installment includes late payment interest on the outstanding amount, calculated from the end of the voluntary payment period. In 2026, the applicable rate is 8.876%.
How to request?
The process is done on the Tax Portal: after authentication, search for "Installment Plan", access "Simulate/Register request" and choose the desired number of installments.
