If you have already filed your IRS and the result is an amount payable to the State of less than €25, good news: you won't have to pay. The Tax Authority forgives amounts below that threshold.
The rule works both ways: if your refund is below €10, you won't receive it either.
According to the Government, on the 2026 State Budget website: "No collection or refund will take place when the IRS amount payable is less than €25 or the amount to be refunded is less than €10."
How is the IRS filing going?
By 20 April, more than 2.1 million returns related to 2025 had been filed. Of these:
- ✅ 745,000 have already been settled by the Tax Authority
- 💸 432,000 resulted in refunds (more than €330 million)
- 📤 204,000 refunds have already been paid by bank transfer (€164.7 million)
- 📩 93,000 returns generated collection notes (€46 million payable to the State)
Watch out for IBAN issues
Some refunds were delayed due to a file processing error, but the Ministry of Finance assures that it has been resolved and was not a widespread issue.
If you are awaiting a refund, confirm on the Tax Portal that your IBAN is correctly linked to your tax account — this is the most common reason for payment delays.
Filing deadline
You have until 30 June to file your IRS return for 2025 income. The sooner you file, the sooner you receive your refund (if applicable).
