The Simplified Business Information (Informação Empresarial Simplificada - IES) is one of the most important annual obligations for companies in Portugal. It consolidates several declarations, which were previously submitted separately, into a single submission. Knowing what it includes and preparing in advance avoids last-minute rushes and penalties.
What is the IES?
The IES is an annual declaration that, in a single act, unifies the submission of accounts and the provision of accounting, tax, and statistical information to various entities, such as the Tax Authority (Autoridade Tributária), the commercial registry, the Bank of Portugal, and the National Institute of Statistics.
What does it include?
The IES includes the annual accounts, the annex with tax information, statistical data, and the registration of the accounts submission. It also includes the SAF-T file for accounting, which supports the reported information.
The deadline
The IES must be submitted by July 15th (deadline to be confirmed for 2026, and may be adjusted by official dispatch). This deadline follows the closing of accounts and the submission of Form 22 (Modelo 22) of the Corporate Income Tax (IRC), making July a demanding month for companies.
Who needs to submit it?
Companies and other entities subject to organised accounting, including sole traders in this situation, are obliged to submit the IES. This obligation exists even if the company had little activity.
How to prepare
Preparation begins long before July, with the closing of accounts and Form 22. Having organised accounting and an in-order SAF-T throughout the year makes the IES submission much simpler.
The consequences of failure
Late submission or submission with errors incurs penalties and can affect the company's fiscal regularity, impacting, for example, access to support and participation in tenders.
