Beverage Packaging Deposit System: How It Works in Portugal
From April, Returning Pays Off
Portugal launches a new deposit system for beverage packaging. 10 cents that come into play — and that you can recover in full.

From April 10, anyone buying a beverage packaged in plastic, aluminum, or metal will pay an extra €0.10 — but it's not a tax or a permanent extra cost. It's a deposit. And it can (and should) be recovered.
💡 The system is simple: return the packaging, get your money back. Don't return it, lose the 10 cents. No complications.
The main goal is to reduce the number of packages that end up in regular waste and help Portugal meet the EU recycling targets. The more containers returned, the more material re-enters the production cycle.
Which packaging is covered?
The system applies to beverage containers up to 3 liters, made of plastic, aluminum, or metal. To check if a container is part of the system, look for the "Volta" symbol or verify the barcode.

How does it work in practice?
The process is straightforward. When you buy a covered beverage, the 10 cents appear separately on the receipt. When you return the packaging, the amount is refunded.
1. Buy the beverage
You pay +€0.10 deposit, itemized on the receipt.
2. Consume and keep the empty container
Keep the label readable, the cap (if applicable), and don't crush the container.
3. Return it at a collection point
You don't need to return it where you bought it. Any participating point works.
4. Get your refund
In cash, voucher, discount, electronic transfer — or even as a donation to a charity.
Where can I return the containers?
🤖 Automatic machines (Volta)
Insert the container, the machine reads the code and calculates the value. You receive a voucher or direct compensation.
🏪 Manual collection points
At participating stores, a staff member checks the container and refunds the amount immediately.
⚠️ Note: placing the container in regular recycling bins or trash does not refund the deposit. Refunds are only processed through the system's collection points.
What condition must the container be in?
To guarantee the refund, the container must meet some basic conditions:
If damaged, it may be refused.
What about cafés and restaurants?
In food service establishments, the deposit is only charged if you take the container with you. If you pay before leaving, the amount is refunded when you hand in the container in good condition at a collection point. Simple and hassle-free.
Why does this matter?
This system is a direct response to European environmental targets — and a concrete step to reduce the environmental impact of packaging.
Day to day, beverages may seem slightly more expensive. But in practice, those who already recycle pay nothing extra — and now receive a direct financial incentive for it.
Once collected, containers are recycled and transformed into new materials, re-entering the production cycle. Less waste, more circularity.
