The Government has released the estimated timelines for this IRS campaign. Here is what taxpayers need to know to plan their refund.
Expanded Automatic IRS
This year, the Automatic IRS covers around 2 million declarations (up from 1.7 million in 2024), now including young people up to 35 years old under the Youth IRS scheme.
Two thirds still receive a refund
Despite the Government having adjusted withholding tables to more closely match actual tax liability, the majority of declarations continue to generate a refund.
Three withholding tables in 2025
Due to mid-year tax changes, three distinct tables were in effect:
- January to July - initial tables
- August to September - interim tables
- October to December - final adjusted tables
Avoid the first and last day
The Tax Portal experiences massive traffic spikes on April 1st and June 30th. The Secretary of State recommends submitting on intermediate days to avoid system failures.
