How Much Does an Accountant Cost in Portugal in 2026?

One of the most frequently asked questions by anyone starting a business or considering changing accountants is: "how much will this cost me?" The honest answer is: it depends. And it depends on much more than you might think.

The cost of an accountant in Portugal is not standardized - it varies based on the type of company, revenue volume, number of documents to process, industry sector, and even the complexity of the tax obligations involved. Two businesses with the same revenue can have very different accounting costs if one has international operations and the other operates only domestically.

In this article, Grupo YOUR Accounting explains how prices are formed, what the market reference values are, and why the cheapest option isn't always the most economical.

The price depends on the work - and every company is different

There is no universal fixed price for accounting services. The fee charged by a certified accountant is determined by the quantity and complexity of the work involved. A company with 20 invoices per month and 2 employees doesn't generate the same workload as a company with 500 invoices, 30 employees, and intra-community operations.

The main factors that influence pricing are:

  1. Legal form: A sole trader under the simplified regime will have lower costs than a limited company with organized accounting.
  2. Document volume: The more purchase and sales invoices, bank statements, credit notes, and other documents to process, the greater the monthly workload.
  3. Number of employees: Payroll processing (salaries, pay slips, Social Security contributions, DMR, annual report) is a separate service that increases proportionally with team size.
  4. VAT regime: A company on a monthly regime requires more submissions and closer monitoring than one on a quarterly regime.
  5. Industry sector: Some sectors have specific obligations - hospitality, healthcare, construction, international trade - requiring greater specialization and more time.
  6. International operations: Intra-community sales, operations with third countries, regimes like OSS or reverse charge add tax complexity.
  7. Additional services: Tax planning, applications for tax benefits (RFAI, SIFIDE, ICE), management support, financial analysis reports, or ad-hoc consultancy are typically charged separately.
  8. Market reference values in 2026

Although every case is different, it's possible to give an idea of the ranges practiced in the Portuguese market:

  9. Self-employed (simplified regime): €50 to €150/month - typically includes VAT returns, IRS filing, and basic tax monitoring.
  10. Sole trader (organized accounting): €100 to €250/month - involves more reporting obligations and closer accounting support.
  11. Single-member or Ltd. company (micro/small business): €150 to €400/month - includes organized accounting, VAT and IRC returns, annual accounts closure, and IES.
  12. Company with employees: Payroll processing typically adds between €15 to €30 per employee/month, depending on volume and complexity.
  13. Larger companies or those with complex operations: €400 to €1,000+/month - companies with many documents, international operations, multiple locations, or advanced financial reporting needs.
  14. Company formation (one-off service): €150 to €500 - includes incorporation, activity start declaration, and initial tax setup.
  15. These values are indicative and vary by region, firm size, and level of service provided. In Lisbon, prices tend to be slightly above the national average, reflecting the greater complexity of businesses and the city's operational costs.

    What's included in monthly fees?

When you hire a certified accountant, the base service normally includes:

  16. Classification and posting of all accounting documents
  17. Periodic VAT return filing (monthly or quarterly)
  18. Monthly SAF-T submission to the Tax Authority
  19. Annual IRC return filing (Model 22)
  20. IES filing (Simplified Business Information)
  21. Annual accounts closure
  22. Tax monitoring and query resolution
  23. Inventory reporting (when applicable)
  24. Services such as payroll processing, tax benefit applications, management consultancy, support during tax inspections, or customized financial reports are generally charged separately or included in more comprehensive packages.

Why the cheapest option can end up costing more

Accounting is not just a legal obligation - it's a management tool. An accountant charging €80/month who doesn't alert you to tax benefits that could save you thousands in IRC is, in practice, costing you much more than a professional charging €250 who actively optimizes your tax burden.

Concrete examples of how a good accountant pays for their own cost:

  25. An SME applying RFAI on a €50,000 investment can deduct up to €12,500 from IRC - a value that easily covers years of fees.
  26. A company that doesn't know it can increase remote work expenses by 110% is paying more IRC than it should.
  27. A VAT delay due to disorganization can generate fines of hundreds or thousands of euros - a cost that professional support would prevent.
  28. The difference between being in the simplified regime or organized accounting can represent thousands of euros per year in taxes, and that analysis must be done by a qualified professional.
  29. How does Grupo YOUR set its fees?

At Grupo YOUR Accounting, we believe that the price should reflect the actual work and value delivered. That's why our fees are set after an initial analysis of each client's situation, taking into account document volume, number of employees, operational complexity, and required services.

We don't practice "one-size-fits-all" pricing because no two companies are the same. What we guarantee is total transparency: the client knows exactly what's included, with no hidden costs or end-of-month surprises.

We offer a free, no-obligation initial consultation to assess your situation and present a customized proposal.

    In summary

  30. There is no fixed price for accounting - it depends on the work involved.
  31. Reference values for SMEs range between €150 and €400/month.
  32. Payroll processing and specialized services are typically charged separately.
  33. A more expensive accountant can be the most economical if they optimize your tax burden.
  34. Always ask for a detailed proposal and compare what's included, not just the price.
